I saw mushrooms covered in leaves. I knelt and carefully removed some leaves. I discovered underneath the distinct impression of a leaf on the cap of a mushroom.
In the work of medieval Flemish painters, toadstools were often associated with Hell. Victorian illustrators in England took a more benign view and developed a popular style that linked fairies and toadstools.
Quotation from The Fungus Among Us (VirtualMuseum.ca)
She began gathering some of the fungi in her apron. I called to her, “Come back! Come back to me! They are poisonous, putrid. They are toadstools.” She only laughed more, and her merry laughter will forever ring in my ears. That evening, she seasoned the soup with fungi…

Such amazing and wonderful hidden detail. Mushrooms are among my favorite of nature’s photographic subjects!
That’s one cool mushrooms! I love the way nature makes us wonder.
I keep my hands in my pockets. Or on the keyboard. I have really big hands and I always need to do something with them!
Great comic.

That’s a beautiful shroom. Last night we watched the episode of ‘Life on Earth’ about jungles, part of which showed mushrooms (some of them really lovely) growing from the filaments of trees they’re in symbiosis with. David Attenborough remarked that the jungle would die without them.
My hands are never idle but I can get into trouble anyway.
My favorite quote from Sartre is : Hell is the other people !
I love the tattoo on your avatar’s leg… do you have it irl too ?
That’s my take on it…pockets full of sins…I once wrote in a poem lol nice to see you out sweetie, I miss you
My wife is allergic to mushrooms…
If only mushrooms weren’t so spongy… and rotten.
now how cool is that?! good thing you were curious enough..
I remember as a child the thrill of picking out only the edible wild mushrooms for breakfast- it was the toadstools and other poisonous mushrooms that provided the plot for fascinating stories.
The infrequently used expression ‘idle hands are the devils playthings’ is reminiscent of the setting of one of my favorite opera’s – namely Goethe’s Faust since Faust traded his immortal soul for knowledge and pleasure to the devil. Ever since this story has become the backdrop for many modern opera’s and songs by bands to which maybe you refer.
However I’m sure you don’t suffer from idle hands – they are probably always busy doing or growing something!!
Best wishes
odd quote, when you think about it….. hands causing harm aren’t idle…. were they idle before they got into trouble? and, as i recall, one of the worst indiscretions that could be imagined in church, when i was a girl, was to fidget. so my hands were SUPPOSED to be idle….. was the devil the instigator of this practice….? and what did it get him? and what’s a devil anyway? little Hot Stuff in the cartoons? a bombshell wearing Prada shoes?
just feeling contrary today…. love your page, love mushrooms…. and the leaf imprint! magical! i once came across a huge pink mushroom with a cleft in it… exactly the size, shape and color of a baby’s bum.
Wonderful capture of the leaf impression. Those out of the ordinary photographs are the ones I always look out for.
