If you push any button long and hard enough, eventually it’s going to go out of order. Whatever you are pushing will stop (which isn’t completely true, because everything moves according to its volume, pressure, rotation and vibration; there are always internal degrees of freedom). A watch that can stop time is theoretically possible (inasmuch as anything is possible “in theory”) –and I want one. I want a watch that can create time by stopping the universe at my whim and leisure. At first, I’d be content with just one more hour of sleep, but eventually I’d tack on another hour for wakey-time. Pretty soon, I’d be up to 48-hour days and 48-month years and 48-year decades. I’d have time to work and finish my studies. I’d have time to be with friends. I’d talk to my family. I would use the same tea bag over and over until the string finally breaks. I’d make daily comics. I’d do something with my hair. I would become more generous. In the natural order of things, I’d be the one pushing the damn buttons (instead of the other way around).
And since you know you cannot see yourself,
so well as by reflection, I, your glass,
will modestly discover to yourself,
that of yourself which you yet know not of.
Quotation from William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar, Act I, Scene II

reminds me of that movie with adam sandler with the ‘universal remote’ that did stuff to the universe, and at the end of his life when he realized God’s design was much better than anything he could conceive, he was given his life back as if it was all a dream and woke up in a bed in ‘bed bath AND BEYOND’ lol where he started…. i want time on my hands, but i don’t want time IN my hands lol it’s far too much responsibility for me
sounds like you’re too busy at the moment to enjoy life as much as you should
Things getting a little crazy, are they?
Hmm…only problem there is you would miraculously age quickly to everyone you stopped time on. There is always a price. The one universal truth that cannot be gotten around. Sad but true.
I’m glad you have a plan – let’s “finesse” it. I think I like the state of perfection, it actually works.
Real time does not go tick-tock, it meanders with the intention of your own mind.
The clock in the photo is awesome. I want one. I would stop time so I wouldn’t have to put up with the rest of the world.
Oh, I know the feeling! I wish I could slow down/ speed up the time whenever I want! But at yoga, I’ve been told to stay in the moment. I’m trying…
Tis a puzzle indeed but it must be said the only thing of value we have to spend is time.
Time management is a big issue… Usually, it’s the best way to evaluate your priorities !
The most important imho, is to find something that makes time stands still. The VIA Survey of Character Strengths taught me that for me, it’s contemplation of beauty !
I want one of those watches, we are in an era of “not enough time” created by the need for constant communication
Ah Sera, but a 48 month year means that you age so dramatically in that short period and people will say,’Jeez, Sera looks so much older and more wrinkled than she was last year’. I’m confused by your details on my blog today, It says that you reside in San Fran UGANDA…… that’s a new one on me. Have the plates shifted and the continents crept up on each other during the night and I’ve missed it on the news? ha ha
On a serious note, like most folks I lead a very active and hectic life, but I don’t hold with this ‘Not enough hours in the day’ malarkey. Personally, I make the effort to halt time every week, usually on two mornings when I get up early, switch off the cell phone and head to destinations for photo shoots. I spend hours enjoying Mother nature’s beauty with no contact with the outside world, and when I am ready I go back home, switch the cell phone back on and connect with the hectic pace once more… it’s my little rebellion, my little haven that reminds me of the wonder and beauty of this world, and sidestepping the modern day frenetic pace of life that we think we have to suffer. Have a great weekend, Sera.
Astrid and I have been sitting here talking about how incredibly gifted you are, Sera. And we mean that sincerely. We always stop and think when we come to your site. It’s been fun to read all the other comments first before adding my own thoughts…to see where everyone else is coming from on the issue of time. The only thing I can add, that almost everyone else might not yet understand experientially is that once you retire, you’re much less organized and don’t get as much done! It’s been a constant refrain from others like me of late. So, something to look forward to.
great shot, nice idea
The hurricane times will pass and no doubt you may be able to look back on those times with some satisfaction –but always allow for some time to smell the flowers whatever time zone you are in . Best wishes
Didn’t realize I already wrote a “blurb” before this. But “… internal degrees of freedom” caught my eye. (again)
It’s the key to stay sane – believe me, or believe me not.
Ginnie is right, it is a delight to see what you made again, very clever is your signature around the clock, those things catch my eyes at once.
You are gifted in word and creation.
Wouldn’t it be great to stop time…..but than would it bore us, having too much time on our hands, we do live in a racing society, we run from A to B and sometimes we run so fast, we can tap ourselves on the shoulder in front of us….
I have learned the last 12 months to take time for each other, do important things, listen, really LISTEN to what others have to say.
I never leave the house for work before I say and kiss Ginnie goodbye, as if I am going on a tour around the world, I live more intense and I try to make a choice in what I do so that I never run out of time.
Thank you so much for this reminder….thanks for your gift to make me sit here and THINK about what you are saying.
I do hope time does not run out of you for a long long time.
Have a great day.
According to a professor I had in college, we’re all aging at the same rate. Wow! Cool!!
Sera, I love the idea of 48-hour days, 48-month years and 48-year decades! But please leave your hair the way it is!!
))
Aaah..too bad no one can invent a watch that stops time. Love everything about this post!
*hugs sera* you look gorgeous as always hun, and so cute in the sitting pose in the last panel
let me know when you find that watch…. i want it to be able to speed time up too, though…… to put an end to formerly endless business meetings, waits in airports, etc.
Some people say time is an illusion, caused by the illusion of space. I don’t understand that, but if they’re right it seems to me the watch you’re wishin’ for could happen.
And yes, you do look cute in the sitting pose.
What I’ve always celebrated about you, Seraphine is that you are who you are, that is, you know how to just be yourself. And there is an exceptional beauty to being authentic. Happy Thanksgiving! I am thankful for this website–it’s fun, it’s not afraid to be silly or go deep into things that have real meaning.
If I could stop time I would speed in front of cops just so they would give chase, then I’d disappear. In reality I would be just around the corner laughing. I would also be a professional bowler, and make sure that I always got a 300 game. Oh, and the world’s greatest magician. And that thing hidden behind a curtain, hey, I’d always know what it was. But the funniest would be to talk with a friend on the phone and then just show up in their bathroom. Too funny.
I often tell my children that the one thing I don’t control is the clock … if they want to be on time for something, they must beat the clock. Of course, it doesn’t help that their mother really needs to stop the clock so that she might be ready to go to … hmmm …
When there doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day, that is the time to pick up a good book and read for at least an hour.
If you always mean to get moving but somehow never find the time to get all your things together drive to the gym have a workout shower and get home again then you may be tempted to think that you re simply too busy to make exercise part of your weight loss program. If you have a hectic lifestyle then it s hard to see where the time will come from. It may not sound a lot but how many of us can t seem to find the time even for that?
