This is probably the coldest summer on record for San Francisco and the surrounding bay area. Our famous layer of marine air– which provides natural air conditioning to California’s coast– is unusually persistent this year. On some days, the sun barely peeks through the fog by noon.
The best time to view the meteor showers is between midnight and 5am. But by midnight, the sky is already shrouded by thick fog; I cannot see any shooting stars.
Perseids Meteor Shower and Viewing Tips (If you see a falling star, don’t forget to make a wish)
The header photo of abandoned budget motels was taken in Reno, Nevada across the street from the Silver Legacy Casino.

First of all, the image of the abandoned motels feels so apocalyptic. So Left-Behindish. It would actually make a great spot for viewing shooting stars because it would be…dark.
You’re so funny, Seraphine. I love your humor! You and Astrid must be long-lost sisters because you are two of a kind. If ever you get together (again), I’ll sit back and enjoy the spectacle.
BTW, it’s been very cool here in The Netherlands, too…in the 60s for over a month now, even when the sun shines. MY kind of weather. I “do” it much better than the HOT alternatives.
love the header photo
i just got up again, i don’t know what’s wrong with my sleep patterns lately, but now i know why the guys were out looking at shooting stars last night… i don’t think they were making wishes tho, bad boys… that picture at the top is utterly depressing lol but great lol
it’s been so thick with humidity here, can’t even see the dark …hate hate it…I want fall and winter
For the first time in what seems like a month, Kansas City is basking in 70 degree weather. It’s been insanely hot this summer.
I wish I could see them too, but in the city, there’s no way ! and comfortably home, even less
When did the Golden West Motor Lodge get cable TV??
:)
Sera!
The weather is really changing everywhere in the globe, here in Brazil, where we almost don’t usually have a ‘winter’ is a little bit colder this year…maybe it is the effect of climate changing and for sure it is not good news…
about fashion, thanks so much for being so sweet to me…your comments always make my day
love,
Kira
I went out and saw a few meteorites; unfortunately the ones I saw were in the north and that is toward Denver so I didn’t bother trying to take any pictures because there’s too much city glow to the north.
I lived in Alameda CA and then Petaluma for a while several years back. The first 6 months I was there people were asked to ration water and then the next 6 months it seemed like it rained every day. Go figure.
We are in the hills in the Scottish Borders, Scotland no light pollution but so much cloud we didn’t see the either
I live in the mojave desert here in So Cal and we too are having cooler (read less hot) weather this summer. Our highs are between 107 and 110, which is about 10 degrees or so cooler than normal.
I didn’t see any stars, but I may have tried too early…
Good cartoon today!
Always superb imagination!
As you – out on the west coast and in San Francisco – are experiencing the coldest summer..we – on the east coast – are experiencing the hottest and dryest. Something is definitely changing. And – I love the images…
I remember working at Embarcadero Center (I had a great view from my office, I could see the Golden Gate and Bay bridges) and having to wait until almost 11 every day for the fog to lift. Oddly, it seemed earlier on the weekends
Good luck seeing stars.
Well, I was listening to The Bad Company last week and their famous – shooting star
)) So, that is enough …..
I need to visit The Bay Area. Our weather here is great for 8 months out of the year in Arizona–the other 4 are lethal in the triple digits. But the fall nights would be optimum for catching shooting stars! When I see one, I will wish for all good things for a girl named Seraphine!
) xoxo
That motel looks much like the ones we expect to sleep in on our way across the continent. Motel 6′s do have wireless internet, don’t they?
We’ve had an unusually cool summer here too until the temperatures jumped to the upper 90′s for 6 days right while we were in the midst of primary packing. I didn’t hear about the meteor showers until the next day and I’m sad because watching them would have been much more interesting than trying to sleep.
When I first came to Canada I was amazed to see how clear the sky was. I had never seen so many stars before!
I stay clear of shooting stars though. Don’t want to be shot
A brilliant image of this motel…just the kind of place to sit and look for shooting stars…love this Sera:)
I remember waking up at 2am and going out in the freezing cold weather looking at the meteor shower. It was worth it.
once i saw a documentary of a married couple that lived on the road in their fancy truck, hauling loads, taking turns driving, sleeping, watching movies in the comfy bed in the back, they had a little apt back there lol loooked neat
prolly don’t talk, ‘oh baby i’m soooo taaaiiiiiirrrrred, i’m hittin’ the hay’
well you can always make your own shooting star
fun comic..
too bad about not witnessing the meteor shower.. well, i wasn’t able to see anything too if that’s any consolation.. ;D
Abandoned motels are a favorite of mine – I like how yours was taken at night, it just adds to the creepiness factor.
