It is permissible to enjoy moments of not understanding? Do we suffer when we understand too much?
The brain is like a muscle. When it is in use we feel very good. Understanding is joyous.
Quotation from Carl Sagan
There is no more lively sensation than that of pain; its impressions are certain and dependable. They never deceive as may those of the pleasure women perpetually feign and almost never experience.
Quotation from Marquis de Sade

If it’s convincing then it’s real to you and I guess that’s what matters. Everything else is speculation.
Sera genius at work, I feel extreme happiness drinking coffee…
One has to wonder if the Marquis just didn’t know what he was doing.
With great understanding comes great disappointment because you realize there is so much more to understand. Too much for one person to learn in one lifetime or maybe in a dozen. That is the main reason if i was offered 1000 years of life i would take it in a fraction of a second. I would greatly miss my loved ones when they died but i could not pass up the opportunity to have all that time to learn as much as i can. What is odd is how sometimes your brain understands something big and nearly freaks out because of it. Those geniuses who have mental breakdowns, it makes me wonder what they understood that threw their brain for a loop.
Very profound words. I wish i could use every part of my brain.
i feel braindead for not having to work for a few weeks now.. ;D
the human brain is a mystery…
The ruins of the castle [of the Marquis de Sade] were acquired in 2001 by fashion designer Pierre Cardin who now holds music festivals there. Sade went into politics after the French Revolution, calling himself ‘Citizen Sade’. Was eventually locked up in an insane asylum, but his wife was allowed to live there with him…. how weird is that?
juxtaposed against beautiful imagery including a beautiful woman….. “the pleasure women perpetually feign”
you’re stretching my brain muscle again, Sera.
Matthew wrote, “With great understanding comes great disappointment because you realize there is so much more to understand.”
Quite the contrary! Man is a curious animal, and I would be greatly disappointed if I ran out of new things I had yet to experience or learn. There is joy in truly learning.
The moment of not understanding (and being aware of it) means a moment of understanding is likely just around the corner.
True but if i ever felt i had learned everything i could go in peace
I really like the photo at the top. Took me a minute to figure it out. Wonderful take on the scene.
You gotta love the Marquis. If you haven’t already seen it, I recommend a movie called Quills.
Allow me to say it: Permission granted! And why not? I grant this to myself all the time. There is a certain existentialism about such rich moments. Another Blog post that Rocks!
have you ever read some of the really evil bits of marquis de sade?? he’s not somebody worth quoting! stuff like that shouldn’t have been published and put into peoples’ heads… i had a really bad day, sorry if my comment isn’t up to snuff, somebody who i thought was a friend, turned out not to be in a very yucky way. i am not fond of crazy people, coz they are never NICE crazy lol
i find that i like it when i’m being stupid. haha
A good analogy is that we’re like 40w lightbulbs experiencing power surges. We need to strengthen our filaments.
I think it’s ‘feeling’ that is the key. Pleasure OR pain..but to really feel the moment!
yes, it was a bad day, hopefully the whole communication is over now… thanks sister…
Le Marquis de Sade is so right… I love the books he wrote !
I like what you did today… For me, reality is relative : )
come by my blog seraphine, i have something to tell you!
I think we shouldn’t try to understand so much anyway – only so much can be understood and processed at once. Especially when you just got up.
Plato’s moral philosophy assumed knowledge of good, will lead us to be good but alas life is not really that simple is it? Knowledge doest always make for morality although it can make us more mindful of acting in a good way. Nor can the knowledge that pain is only the result of an electrical signal travelling to the brain diminishing the real suffering from chronic pain.
However it could well be that in the totality of all human experience we never really understand the most basic essential features of the Cosmos – should you side with those Physicists who think the Cosmos is comprised of several dimensions. I think we can be happy in the realization of the immensity of what we don’t understand and try to imagine it. .
Best wishes
hahaha, my husband’s belly button is a total lint farm, it doesn’t matter how long, i can always find lint in there!!!! and yes i made that design myself, i designed it for a logo for a friend, but she didn’t like it, so i didn’t want to waste it
my husband is the bestest potato, i just want to make french fries out of him and eat him up!!!
I love it when I do not understand something I see. I will stare at it and try to figure it out. Somehow it is always a disappointment when I finally figure out what it is, because then the mystery is lost forever.
i’m glad i didn’t waste it too, but it doesn’t look near as pretty as what i have in my head!! it looks childish and clunky compared to what i imagine
We are not meant to understand everything, thats what keeps life interesting.
Hum, when is reality – not? Interesting and thought provoking today. And I hate it when I don’t understand something!!
This is a mixed grocery bag again. Pain, brain growing, water, shadows, vista, and a beautiful toon, or tune…
It was like buying corn cobs when you actually tuned in into preparing pasta. I don’t know, I still like them sliced mushrooms contained in a can for the sauce. Grab one. Well, you can do your pasta, but the corn should come first. The sweetness fades within hours and turns to starch. Maybe do both, that will serve us all.
As you see from the above, I don’t have anything intelligent to say. But the “shadows” are truthfully hunting us, that I do believe. As for the brain … as I said in my last post, that thing is a totally overrated commodity. Believe me, the heart rules!
What a beautiful series of pictures, s Bravo.
