I wonder if chimpanzees sit in clutter like I do? Do they fluff their leaves before they go to sleep? Do they make poems when they see the sunrise or fall in love?
“Homo Sapiens” sit in unique and isolated splendor as the sole member of a genus. Although we have around 98% complete compatibility with the chimpanzee, many would nevertheless still argue “that 2% difference makes all of the difference.”
Quotation from Lindsay’s Lobes, A History of Science
Jane Goodall on What Separates Us From the Apes?” “There isn’t a sharp line dividing humans from the animal kingdom.”

that 2 % is unconditional Love, that’s why they’re more worthy than we are
except for you, of course, Cosmic Girl!
“that 2% difference makes all of the difference.”
What a peculiar thing to say. Small differences are what makes for all the variety of life I would have thought.
I think it is the 2% that makes us not fling poop at other people passing by.
Ok, seriously, I think the greatest difference in our evolution is that we became fully upright; walking on two legs at all times. That freed up two arms and allowed evolution to take a completely different path that encouraged brain development.
You have me smiling! Chimpanzee’s composing poetry? What a cool thought, Sera! I do believe I have their sense of humor!!!
) Have a nice day…
interesting as well as cool post.
Pondring on the percentages further, my mind goes to the other extreme. I would like to think I am considerably more than 2% different to… oh lets say George Bush for example, I’m hoping it’s closer to 100%. Chimps I’m not so bothered about
In some people, the 2% feels more like 0.2%. But hey, animals are lovely creatures anyway!
I personally think chimps are fabulous creatures and much more lovable than say, some of the people I see on the train everyday.
Jane Goodall is always worth watching since she challenges one to expand our social justice perspective to include other species. Small differences do make a world of difference –but we also share an awful lot in common. Hence when we talk about equality it is generally confined to humans which characterizes human’s general unwillingness to share or recognize the argument for equality to embrace other species. I think that is because of the way we see ourselves as humans which until fairly recently did not recognize those same human traits in other species with whom we are closely related and consequently we have shown a reluctance to share habitat.
At the beginning of the 18th century Linnaeus believed that man belonged in the same genus as the apes and since then his assertion has been largely verified in terms of DNA composition. If that kind of classification were being made from scratch today using simply DNA evidence, man might well be classified purely from a scientific point of view as a particularly intelligent strand of ape whose ancestry fork evolved from a number of those who adapted to walking upright.
Best wishes
i saw a documentary where a guy had taught a huge ape sign linguage, then didn’t see him for 20 years, and went back to visit and the monkey said ‘i love you’ and ‘banana’ and stuff to him right away…. it was quite touching
You always make me think, Seraphine, which I anticipate when I open up your page. But today, besides having to think, I just LOVE the perspective on your one leg and tennis shoe!!!
Why do have to think about some of the men I work with
some of them are, but than I know some very clever monkeys/animals too.
I love your pictures..it is what Ginnie says, that perspective is perfect.
(in the morning we always are sitting at the table doing out blogroll, I go to work in 5 minutes.
Have a great day/weekend.
It would be ironic if one of humanity’s greatest achievements – the decoding of the human and the chimpanzee genomes – lead us to conclude that, under the skin, we are really just apes.
What the slight difference tells us is simply that we need to exercise compassion with one another as well as all the other creatures we share the planet with.
Share the planet? Since when do we share anything? It’s the hallmark of our race to take what we want and to hell with whatever gets in our way. It’s what has made us so successful as a species but the problem is we never even tried to outgrow that once we became so successful there was no competition anymore. As for the chimp thing, I have seen those animals go freakin nuts and tear a human apart before so they are not all lovable and cute at all times. Just like humans some are peaceful and others are violent. You can say that about any species on this planet. It bugs me when people don’t give enough respect to these animals. Yes they can be cute and yes they seem human at times but they are not us and never will be.
Never really thought about it. Bet they do fluff their leaves before they go to sleep hehehe….but 2% I think some people I know must be closer to 1%
oooooohhh i like that 2%!
that’s what i’ll say next time i POOK my husband in da eye
‘better a shiner than a whiner’ hehe… how ya doin’ sister? when do you start school?
i will probably go out and take some pictures this summer, i’ve got some healing to do first, got a book 6 weeks to be free of back pain coming soon…

Fling poop, now there’s a good idea! I like the photo, it’s all I saw at first so I interpreted it as 2 percent awake. Or maybe 2 percent coffee.
Lol!! That is so right and thank God for the 2%…great post Sera!!
