The photo of Coco in today’s comic was taken by Elaine, who has an awesome photo page called Elaine Remains. Coco passed away last Saturday.
Every dog carries an ID in his back pocket, so to speak. On each side of the rectum is an anal sac, which contains a strong-smelling fluid. This fluid is the equivalent of a dog’s thumb-print. With a quick sniff, dogs can tell more about each other than we could determine by rifling through one another’s wallets. Dogs can tell the sex, age, health, reproductive status, diet, and mood from those smells. They get all the information they need to decide whether they want to associate with that dog and what kind of relationship they ought to have.

oh Sera, sarah, sera, i love it!!!! i’m sitting here blubbering like an idiot, total tearage…. thank you sooooo much my dear dear friend!!!!! i’ve got to go get hubby and show him this, my heart is swelling!!! must share!!!! i love you girl, you know that right???
so sorry about your lovely dog elaine xx
Such a lovely memorial to Elaine’s sweet pup!! Beautiful!! And then – I love the little comic about the butt-sniffing-dogs. So very creative!!!
Sorry to hear about Coco, great pup! Dogs are borned to sniff each other
, they can’t sleep if they don’t sniff someting or someone
I love dogs! Great images and great message!!
Oh I am so so sorry, poor Coco, however, dogs do go to Heaven, my Bennie (German Sheppard) came to me in a dream…I know this for a fact, coco is happy like a newborn well loved, well taken care of puppy…
I was told as a child that pets don’t go to heaven with people and when I protested, was told they have their own. I decided then that if that’s true I’d rather go to that one myself. Coco is there with Garth who’s showing her all the best sniffing places.
I’m sorry to hear about Coco (I love dogs and miss my old pal).
Still, this post made me laugh – rectal profiling!
Now, when I see dogs sniffing one another, I’ll be suitably impressed rather than doing the grimace thing… Or maybe I’ll do both.
I think the fact that they can lick their own private parts is more impressive. A lesson to us all in self sufficiency
I just have the sad news a couple of minutes before visiting you!
Beautiful homage!
That is one super cute dog. It’s too bad they have to go. Mine died almost 7 years ago and i still haven’t wanted to replace her. I will some day but not now.
sweet little dog
That’s a very nice thing you have done here for Elaine
x
i’m just watching all the beautiful comments
seems a bit weird to me that the same folks who say dogs have no soul are often the ones wreaking havoc on the souls of others. dogs, on the other hand, can teach us a lot about how to make the world a better place. i guess Coco is now in that better place. i have a funny story about dogs and their sniffing habits.
I always think of dogs lifting their legs as “dog-blogging.” Which makes butt-sniffing the equivalent of leaving a comment.
I’m sorry for your loss, Elaine. I know how hard it can be to lose a much loved pet.
As for your tribute, Sera, I think it’s sweet and really funny at the same time.
Loved the comic. Made me laugh!
So sorry for your loss, Elaine. Dogs become family and their loss, of course, is hard.
You have made Elaine’s day…and mine, dear Seraphine. That is so very touching…and educational. I really learned something with that quote. I had no idea. I’ll never forget it going forward as I watch dogs do their thing. It makes so much sense!
thank you for your kind words everyone, it gives me a big ol’ lump in my throat to see this comic and all your reactions…. i have a new dog, who is upset at having to leave his parents, and won’t give me a moment to type lol a mini schnauzer
a beautiful tribute to Coco, one of the stars of the web since I know Elaine. It’s very nice of you Sera, he certainly deserved a comic, this brave coco !
and welcome to the new dog
Nice day and Friendship
So funny : D
Losing a friend is always so difficult. That is a very nice tribute.
Sorry to hear about Coco, he looked like a really great dog.
Mucho butt info. I wonder if we should all start sniffing each other… I mean, it may be more exact science than online dating, right?
i keep looking at this page with my baby up top, immortalized, loved, honored… sniff sniff… if you want you can go see my new dog on my blog
Seraphine Model Management (SMM), a modeling agency in Second Life? Good shit!
thanks Sarah, i wasn’t sure if it was tacky to post such a deathy photo…. i’m mega depressed tho, so not thinking clearly
right now sparky is driving me frikkin’ CRAZY, when my husband is not home, he whines CONSTANTLY, at first i was talking to him constantly, then i started shushing him when the talking didn’t help, and he ignored the shushing, so i started to ignore him and he would just squat in from of me and bark/howl… really loud, and i had already taken him outside twice that day, and tried to feed him but he wouldn’t eat… as soon as my husband comes home he’s a dream dog, grrrr, i think it’s coz his last owner was male, and so is hubby, and i’m just not cutting the mustard for him as a constant companion… yes… houston, we have a problem
i just talked to his former owners and they want to come and pick him up!!! i should have waited a few days to see if sparky changed before updating them… grrrr… i told them to let me see how he is tomorrow….
I absolutely love this wonderful picture Sera!!!
