Quod erat demonstrandum might as well mean “Quickly ends discussion.” It’s a somewhat pretentious notation placed at the end of a mathematical proof to indicate its completion.
Freud may have been too conservative in his characterization of the unconscious. The architecture of the mind is such that a great deal of mental processing occurs outside of conscious awareness.
Quotation from Timothy D. Wilson, Know Thyself
I am who I choose to be. I always have been what I chose, though not always what I pleased.
Quotation from Lois McMaster Bujold

The Church in Santiago de Puriscal was built, I have heard, without architectural blueprints. It was constructed entirely from a priest’s drawings. Local townspeople were required to help build the church or they risked being jailed. The church was built on unstable, uneven ground. In the 1960′s, the two towers were added, which eventually caused the main structure to shift and crack. A large earthquake in 1990 damaged the church beyond repair. I think the church may have recently been torn down. (This photo was taken in January 2009).
So . . . if you build it, they will . . . be squished?
I only know a few words in Latin and Quod erat demonstrandum ain’t them.
But I’m digging Bujold’s words. If I were wearing a hat, I’d tip it to you. Rah.
calculus lasts forever? after we are gone will that tree fall in the forest and be heard? calculus may disappear without a witness, we all know that the particles in particle physics act differently when they are being observed… can i get a WITNESS????
infinity plus one is greater than forever, theoretically.
it’s proof god exists, according to some.
i’ll be your witness, elaine, since
i act differently when i’m alone too.
Vera interrogatio non sciendi est si machinae cogitant, sed si homines cogitant !
bisous
Unfortunately, infinity is not a number, so the argument inf + 1 is meaningless.
Some things are countably infinite (e.g. integers), some things are uncountably infinite (real numbers) and somethings make your head hurt (the set of all sets not containing themselves).
The only thing that changes is viewpoint
Quickly ends discussion = Q.E.D. Excellent!
I’m always wary of those who end a statement in such a way.
Change is the only constant…I have long believed in the philosophy of impermanence. One must strive to apply it in our daily lives.Love the wonderful image Sera!
Are you sure that it was an earthquake? Because I can see a lot of thread and I have the feeling that a geant spider has built its cobweb in this area!
Wow Cosmic girl my IQ just rose a bit, I’m liking it
love this…and the church still looks magnificent
very cool and thoughtful post today.
I hate thinking about that. Ends terrify me. I’m the kind of person who anticipate too much, when my contract at work will end, when the lease will end, when holidays will end…
It’s my European side. A complicated relationship with time.
You have reminded me of an old school headmaster of mine who used to finish most sentences with a touch of Latin to confuse our tiny minds ( at that age we were more concerned with bubble gum cards and where we could get our next stash of ganja). He once a year did a big speech and demo in a school assembly using latin quotations and a lit bunsen burner which he’d offer a random first year pupil to place a finger into as a demo that we don’t always need to ‘do’ something when we know it’s dangerous or wrong to do it….
One year, when I was in sixth form, he did his yearly speech and the first year pupil stuck his finger straight into the flame when told to do so……… we laughed a lot and the headmaster never quoted Latin phrases or did that demo ever again!
I use a modern take on QED to end sentences, ‘So there!’. It’s just as pretentious and anoying ha ha.
How about forever? Doesn’t that last forever? Just because we can’t conceptualize it doesn’t mean it isn’t always going to be forever.
Nice photo of this gritty looking town.
Those academics and their jargon. I’m glad we bloggers don’t use any.
Hmmmm, I think I need a nap, my poor aging brain overloaded and is about to explode. Vini, vidi, vici … there, I’m done.
I liked the image of the church.
eternity is an eternal subject! and a maths subject as well!^_0
great church, nice one
WONDERFUL CHURCH, hanks for stopping by my site!
A thought of the day “Nothing lasts forever” for humorous or scientific … We have a choice!
Agree with Sera ! “Nothing lasts forever !”
great picture and great post !
i like the angel you have taken the picture from.. intresting:)
That photo looked like Cincinnati! Scary for a moment. Freud: I never liked Freud as a Psychology major in college. We had one Professor who was brilliant when it came to the topic of everything Freudian. He made learning fun and yet, he gave up on a private practice to be an industrial consultant. Still, a cool Prof! lol!
I like you richard – you are my kind of man…
Anyway Sera, the funky church might have collapsed – perhaps the faith survived.
It is kinda creepy that particles in physics act differently when observed but also fascinating. Makes you wonder if the universe was created or created itself.
Unless you assume time to be non-linear.
