Everyone has a charm to ward off evil. Some wear tiny crosses at their throats. Others wear copper bracelets to ward off disease. I know a man who won’t walk under a ladder because it’s “bad luck.” Rabbits feet were popular a century ago as good luck charms. Wearing “lucky” socks, underpants or hats are common charms against injury or defeat. I turn the other way whenever a black cat crosses my path. I cross my fingers for luck. I also cross them behind my back when I tell a white lie.
