The war in Europe was actually fought against fascism and one of the outcomes of it was a Labour government (Socialist) in the UK. This was the Government which introduced the National Health Service bringing free medical treatment to all. Ample fodder to keep "Remembrance Day" well and alive for those who got killed in combat. I worked with war veterans from Korea and Vietnam for half a year. You should hear their stories. They are colorful and sad. The collateral damage is not only death, but more so the hundred of thousands of people who came back, damaged beyond repair, drugged up ... lost. And this game is continuing in Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan. It's fine to hug a veteran, it's better to aim for that there will be no veterans at all.
