Cash for Clunkers is a government program offering “cash” towards the purchase of a new car in return for junking an older automobile. The purpose of the program is to stimulate the economy and to encourage the purchase of more fuel-efficient automobiles.
Some of the folks who drive a beater all the time are unlikely to get a new car loan.

Seraphine: First of all, I laughed at this comic posting! But back to the car program, I actually had a friend in New Mexico who was not happy when he tried to trade in a pickup truck for a Prius. I don’t know what went wrong exactly, but I’m sure this program is well intended.
Yeah, but not everybody qualifies for Cash for Clunkers. Plus, dealers have been jacking up the retail prices on cars and/or forcing new buyers to purchase certain models.
They destroy the old cars by running toxic chemicals through the engines so they can’t be resold. It just sounds wasteful to me, not just making every trade-in worth no more than $4500, but also expecting people who can only afford cheap transportation to make payments on very expensive automobiles.
Cash for clunkers could be expanded to include people, there are plenty of two legged clunkers walking down the streets.
Maybe offer those folks a $4500 rebate to visit a nutritionist and an exercise program. Government in return would save millions in health-care costs. Obesity after all is presently the #1 health risk leading to cardiac arrest! (not smoking, haha…)
Perhaps Kirafashionwould like to explain how buying and running a car is great for the environment. Not only do they burn fossil fuels, polluting the atmosphere every time they move but there is a huge carbon footprint involved in their manufacture. A modern car may be marginally less polluting than an old one but design and environment wise they are still tin dinosaurs.

Ah yes! More of the “but it feels good” legislation from our current government. I love how they start these programs and never factor in the basic level of greed in corporate America. Yes lets allow people to turn in their clunkers for a new car. What a great idea if you don’t look at what is inevitable. The car industry is using the opportunity to gauge the prices of their vehicles and make it near impossible for someone in real need of a program like this to use it. I mean really, there is no control out there for the details in this plan. Letting the industry force consumers to use it for very specific models of cars is just plain underhanded. With no control this plan like every other this current government has tried is going to fail in its objective. However it sounds and feels good so that’s all that really matters right. They can feel better about themselves for a little while and maybe take the heat off some their more socialist/communist plans like the health care system they are planning on that will be just as useless as Britain or Canada. Ya lest forget about that one real quick right? It only makes it impossible to continue to get care if your a certain age? No longer useful to society? Well then you don’t deserve to exist any longer right? I can’t wait for that to finally register on the populace at large. Of course by then it will be too late like everything else.
