We need to cooperate more. There may have been valid disagreements, but it’s clear that the old system of partisanship isn’t working well. Dividing everyone into camps (rich/poor, left/right, east/west, jew/arab, black/white etc.) has left everyone diminished for the experience.
Don’t listen to those who say, you are taking too big a chance… Don’t listen when the little voice of fear inside you rears its ugly head and says, they all smarter than you out there. They’re more talented, they’re taller, blonder, prettier, luckier and they have connections. I firmly believe that if you follow a path that interests you, not to the exclusion of love, sensitivity, and cooperation with others, but with the strength of conviction that you can move others by your own efforts, and do not make success or failure the criteria by which you live, the chances are you’ll be a person worthy of your own respects.
Quotation from Neil Simon

you always are so clever
a kiss for you my friend!
Politics is so frustrating. Even when you know you are right, the person you are arguing with can just choose not to believe you. Even when you hold up proof and say, “SEE?” The other person can say, “No, that’s not real.” ARGH.
Hi Sera
Although no House Republican voted in favor, I noted 11 Democrats also voted against with the Republicans. I presume there will be a number of changes in the Senate.
As you say it is very disappointing to see such divisive politics to ensure blame falls squarely on the Democrats should the package fail, rather than to a have a bi partisan approach one would have thought might have been motivated by the announcements of a further 500, 000 job losses since Obama has been elected with more to come.
I think most of the package directed to investments in the future is highly commendable, to generate current new jobs with longer term sustainable investments from the economic investment multiplier effect in preference to currant consumption or to unsustainable overall net tax cuts.
But such projects require rigoroures application throughout the country dependant upon an imaginative bi partisan approach in implementation if they are to be successful in creating new jobs. It is much less effective to simply rely on tax cuts (other than those directed at the lower end likely to be spent ) or to rely on direct tax cuts to business to stimulate more jobs unless you tie those tax breaks directly to a qualifying requirement for investment spending and accountability.
Nevertheless the benefits of any stimulus packages during the current deleveraging process representative of the credit morass remains risky. In that respect, as I have mentioned I would have liked to see the 2 more clearly linked (measures to help consumers with credit, to hold on to their homes and for small business to have credit maintained ) which might have provided more imaginative sound approach with a bi partisan approach.
Best wishes
Wise words Neil Simon.
