My most recent negative obsession (& it was awhile ago now) was a friendship that I believed to be true but it wasn’t. I obsessed over the why for a long time … I finally let it go when I realised that the person I believed I was in friendship with, didn’t exist. Then they disappeared like a vapour … never to be missed or lamented. You cannot obsess over someone who was never there. Dust in the wind … we are all dust in the wind.

If obsession is a continual irrational intrusion of a preoccupation of the mind than there can be no healthy obsession so maybe we had better say ……just as the song said ……it was just fascination? But then again if you’re obsessed with always trying to do the right thing than maybe that’s a rational preoccupation towards a high order moral obsession that otherwise would be paranoia.

I like some of my obsessions. I think they define me and, as long as I’m aware and in at least some semblance of control over them, I don’t think they’re necessarily unhealthy.

My obsessions make me cringe, embarassed… exposing my lack of control, my weaknesses, my flaws. Any of them if exposed, would have the consequence of fatally embarassing me. I don’t think they would hurt anyone else. Most people who learned of them would just laugh at me. So does that make them good obsessions or bad obsessions?

Obsession is a strong word. I don’t feel i am obsessed about anything. My mothers dog on the other hand is obsessed with chasing a ball. I mean any ball. You roll them for any length of the floor and he is on it. But once you’ve made that mistake you will have him in your face for hours tying to get you to keep rolling it. He would run after that thing till his heart gave out. Now THAT’S obsession.
Obsession sounds like a negative word, although some may see it as neutral. It’s also quite strong. I don’t think I have any, but I do have my manias and quirks… Now take the comment above, I agree that’s a hell of an obsession, I’ve known such a dog once, a friend’s cocker spaniel hehehe

well I don’t know if I am obsessed with anything… I mean I loove fashion and I’m really interested in fashion , but I wouldn’t say that I’m obsessed, so I don’t know if there are other things with that I’m obsessed, I will think about it.
Good and bad obsessions? I guess they’re bad if they cause harm to the obsessor or the obsessee. I guess they’re good if they lead to good things. Obsession with love, with generosity, with giving Gary a shoulder rub.. that sort of thing.
I guess I’m obsessed with traveling, improving my blog, learning new stuffs in life. Oh, and chocolate.

Obsessions are never “good” I think, because it’s in the word itself meaning “something that has taken possession of you” while you think that you possess it. Being possessed is contrary to our value that freedom is a great good. But we are not free although we think we are. We are free to express many obsessions, and call that freedom. Some obsessions are forbidden such as the urge to set places in fire or to steal. Another kind of obsessions are hindrances for a “normal” life and we call them neuroticisms and we have therapists for them. But most obsessions are valued, cherished and/or tolerated. Keep your obsessions under control, though! Knowing that you are (in danger of being) obsessed is the first, important step. I’m obsessed by photoblogging and I must keep it under control.

Oh, I love obsessing about stuff! But I only have good obsessions, I do believe. I’m obsessed with things like colour-coordinating my clothes (and sometimes my books and other things too), with belts (I feel naked without one), with dancing, with wine, with language, with life… And yeah, I definitely don’t expect any answers.
