Sarah Clark, who asks “what has happened to decent customer service?” is the inspiration for today’s comic. And she’s right. But also, having worked at both sides of the register, I’ll say this: the customer is not always the most pleasant person in the world.
I’m terribly swamped, so I may miss a couple of comics this week. There will be regular updates, but maybe three or four new comics rather of the customary five or six. This is temporary. Please leave lots of comments so I don’t feel bad.
As long as the world is turning and spinning, we’re gonna be dizzy and we’re gonna make mistakes.

When someone is impatient and says, “I haven’t got all day,” I always wonder: How can that be? How can you not have all day?

As a self-employed American, I can assure you that the old adage “the customer is always right” is absolute bullshit. Most of the time, the customer is dead wrong.
LOL. Such a fast turnaround. Well done. The next time get jaded on MY side of the register, I’ll ask them to open their cash drawer for me.
xo
Sarahs last blog post..Puhleez. This is what you call customer service?
I had so many arguments with management over this when I worked in retail – as far as I was concerned the customer is not always right: the customer is a bad tempered, arrogant, cheeky, stuck-up, annoying piece of shit… and if they treat me like crap I’m going to treat them back in the same manner. I don’t give a shit if it loses a sale!

The customer is is usually in a hurry, having a bad day and looking for someone to take it out on. I wouldn’t work in retail if they paid me what the job is really worth to put up with that carp!
And as to blog post frequency … you do so well to do what you do already Sera … but really! We don’t have ALL day you know!!! Toot Suite!!!
I especially like to be particularly sweet, cheerful and agreeable to the nastiest customers. Not sarcastic, just sweeter than sugar. They don’t always know what to make of it. It often deflates them a bit.
And please — you have a nice day!

You mean like trying to be helpful when asked, ‘What size shirt does a 40 year old man wear?’ I try to limit my retail interactions as much as possible.
You must be swamped beyond belief to actually say so but please take your time. We’re spoiled by your abundant gifts.
Lots and lots and lots of comments! Don’t feel bad. Get things done. Keep posting these amazing posts as regularly as works. I wership dhems.
customer service? having worked retail for 5 years of my life I can definitely tell you it’s worse behind the register, I can’t even begin to describe the shit I’ve delt with from customers!!

In France, we say “the customer is king, but all the kings were beheaded”. Hence the terrible customer service.
Or is it just a lame excuse…?

Having worked at both sides of the counter also, I know that the customer is definitely not always right. And the one big difference is, that if the service personell makes a mistake, it is often a honest mistake or them being under pressure because they are understaffed. Whereas there are a lot of customers who are deliberately being pricks and taking out their anger on service personell and think that because they are the customer, they can treat the staff like crap. Having said all that, I do also think that a person who is passionate about good customer service, like I used to be when I worked in hospitality, can surprisingly often calm customers down if they really try.

Oh God, costumers. I’ve taken a vow to never ever work in retail again once I’m finished with my current job. People who blame you for their bad days, their incapability to tell time (“Could you wrap faster please, I have to be somewhere”. I was bleeding because of a paper cut during that one – and she knew.), people who act stupid on purpose (What, this item isn’t on sale? I was sure it was!) or otherwise expect you to be omnipotent, omnipresent – an all-knowing target dummy.
I have also worked as a mystery shopper though, and seen my fair share of terrible costumer service.
So yeah, solution – find a nice job where they put me in front of a desk and leave me alone.
