Everyone has skeletons, if they have any spine at all.

Now everybody that’s grown got skeleton,
bones they got hidden away.
Yes y’all, there’s a freak in us all,
yet some choose not to say.

Yup, the 5.7% statistic is pretty sad.

I guess if you are dead you won’t really care if you are collected or not. And about 1000 years after we are all gone, no one will remember us either. Sad, but true!

The topic of death has always been depressing to me. But i think that you have tackled it with tact and humor. Good job!

Weren’t you the one who was supposed to keep track of Palins new $150,000 wardrobe outfits? Isn’t that YOUR domain? Instead you are talking about ashes. You sound like a “dead-head”. ….ashes, ashes all go down.
I don’t know.
Just as a question – what exactly is a “memorial service”?????
My dad died a a few years ago, and we spread his ashes very ceremonially underneath a apple tree. That was our memorial service, with music, poems and all…
So, is my dad therefore part of the 56%?
What do these churches know! They only count the bodies they can claim.

According to Tibetan belief the mortal remains are merely an empty vessel. The dead man’s spirit is gone, its fate to be decided by karma accumulated through all past lives. Although most of us are neither Tibetan nor Buddhists a good practice for oneself and all the lost and lonely souls is that of tonglen which means sending and taking. When we see or feel suffering, we breathe in with the notion of completely feeling it, accepting it, and owning it and then we breathe out, radiating compassion and loving-kindness.

I’d love to be cast onto the savannah and have my bones picked clean by the vultures.

Services and being collected is a sign of friends+family around the died person. If they are not showing up in that hugue numbers, it’s a sign on the wall, a “mene tekel”. We are too individualistic.
Yep, i couldn’t care less what is done with my body after death. Do what ya like. It isn’t me. Death has always fascinated me. Its the one thing in life we are truly alone in. No one takes that journey with you. I am in no hurry to take that journey but i am not scared of it either. It is going to be interesting. Will there be something or nothing at the end?
“Gaa I can’t sleep.” Ha!Ha! You crazy girl!
Lady in the street, Freak in the sheets – better than the other way ’round.
I knd of agree with Dolce, except living closer to woods than savannahs, my idea was always, “Drag my carcass out in the woods and lean it up against a tree. First come first serve.”
The new website I gave is where I kinda dig around in the closet.

This isn’t an happy post! I’m going to dream of the poor souls that no one pick up…
Fine, I’d sign up for reincarnation.
The body is just an empty package once the spirit has been released. Rituals that follow are for those left behind to pick up the remains. I guess 5.7 don’t need that ritual…

Incineration prevailed in the ancient world, with notable exceptions Egypt; whose embalming practices influenced Israel; you read of Joseph’s kingly funeral complete with embalmed body attended by Pharaoh and his hordes that came from Egypt to pay their respects. Romans respected burial-places so that even persecuted christens were allowed to bury their dead undisturbed. In Australia prior to colonization Aboriginal practices varied from nation to nation but cremation was widespread with evidence dating back at least 40,000 years ago. Christianity now recognizes the ash within a pot as the ‘body’.
Best wishes
