Telling porkies is a politicians stock-in-trade. Sanctioned lies is what attracts most of the pathological liars to the job in the first place. You must ALWAYS tell the people what they want to hear … and be totally prepared to LIE your way out when caught out. Or in Bill’s case … with zipper undone and cigar in hand. Lol! At least he was entertaining … George W has been as dull as ditch water.

True, all of those mentioned are unacceptable examples of lying. But are voters prepared to hear the truth and how will they react politically to it?
In 1979 President Jimmy Carter spoke about the fact he thought the USA had strayed from its hard-working roots and strong community ties to one that was worshiping self-indulgence and consumption, warning that without change it was it was headed for fragmentation and self-interest. His speech might have been a tad naive to expect it to be palatable amongst voters, but it was met with great hostility and scorn as the Reagan administration promised all Americans they could have it all and much more, since the deficit didn’t matter. Every administration has since promised much of the same; spend your way to future prosperity, increased private and government debt doesn’t matter.
We are disgusted by lies but is anyone also genuinely interested in hearing the truth?

PS –I should mention in fairness that the Clinton administration in the final year of office did show a tiny budget surplus, which was a considerable improvement over the large deficits previously. However private debt had increased and the dot com bubble which created additional tax revenue /temporary wealth burst not long afterwards.
