Fallen Eyelash
I can’t think of anyone who hasn’t wished for world peace.
It’s a wasted wish, like wishing you were young again.
Everyone should get at least three wishes in their
lifetime, to make up for the ones we squander.
When the gods wish to punish us, they answer our prayers.
Quotation from Oscar Wilde
Remember that not getting what you want
is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
Quotation from The Dalai Lama

That Oscar Wilde quote was shared with me a while back when I was reeling from ‘getting what I wanted’…taught me to be very careful about what I want…which is good. Being specific, I reckon, helps you be clear about what you don’t want.

there are two tragedies in the world. one is not getting what you most desire. the other is getting it.
I can’t remember who first said that but it’s true

And what about desiring that your desire doesn’t come true (because of the reasons you mentioned) :)? Maybe you shouldn’t desire that. You have to be 1) optimistic and 2) stoic to be lucky. So I try to be that. But the more I strive for these traits, the less lucky I get because I get frustrated not becoming optimistic and stoic. Maybe that’s better for me. Realising this, now I’m lucky again, until I become pessimistic and dependent on all kinds of events that occur. It’s a circle, just like the orthodox protestant who feels that he is sinful and feeds that feeling because the more sinful you feel, the holier you will become. But then one morning he thinks: what a holy man am I, being aware that I am so full of sins! He immediately realizes that this is a sinful thought.

This may be your most profound entry to date. I actually have no clever, smart-ass remark for you. “Try not to piss off the universe by wishing for world peace.” Brilliant!

hi sera, i love the dalai lama sentence you posted…
the drawing is funny, and soo true.
anyway, just so you know, i love it when you leave comments about daniel on my blog. he is really a gorgeous baby/toddler. it’s been a blessing. sofia is 14 and already a teen so she never stays home. Daniel, on the other hand, is needy of us, of our attention and care. 2 opposites in the same house. its tough, but fun.
have a great week, sera.

It’s been awhile since any of my prayers have been answered. So, maybe, just for kicks and to show me how getting what I want is bad for me, I should have some of my wishes granted.

world peace is a dream, but we never must stop dreaming….

Yeah… be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it. Unless it’s world peace, I guess.
You know I love all your comics, but I think this is one of my all time favourites. You are a star, Sera.

It reminds me of the interviews of famous people, who always say there are against AIDS, pro-peace, against war, pro-freedom etc. Empty words even though we probably all mean it… but don’t do much about it.

The humorist Oscar Wilde was a good judge of human nature along with the Dali lama, since I think wanting and wishing for things don’t always make us any happier even when they do come true. But that doesn’t negate the value or intention of wishing you well or sending off well wishes or peace wishes. Best wishes

Yes, as Lindsay says too, it’s good thing to wish well on others. Here are the Four Immeasurables of Buddhism:
May all sentient beings enjoy happiness and the root of happiness; may they be free from suffering and the root of suffering; may they not be separated from the great happiness devoid of suffering; may they dwell in the great equanimity free from passion, aggression and prejudice.
Nice post, Sera.
