Wearing the Chador
Why does it matter what people wear? Our dress defines us as individuals and members
of society. It expresses who we are, to a some degree. When society mandates what is
acceptable to wear, it also limits full expression of a person’s individuality and creativity.

I have always dressed according to certain Basic Guy Fashion Rules, including: “Both of your socks should always be the same color.” Or they should at least both be fairly dark.

It becomes a problem when clothing is being used as a means of oppressing a certain part of humanity, such as women. Forcing women to cover their hair and face so no other man can look at them is like declaring that women are men’s property- this is what really makes me angry about it.

It’s the argument of “is banning traditional dress oppressing a culture, or asking them to fit in with their new culture to stop them being alienated in their new country…”

What I always find remarkable and refreshing is the brightness of gatherings of African women; to observe a sea of amazing colours distinguishing tribal areas or family roots regardless of religion.
In Bangladesh, Pakistan and India vivid bright oranges and reds are popular (similar to the sari) with a lot of Muslim women observing hijab.
But interestingly enough in some secular nations where there is an absence of religious police such as Turkey, Iraq and Egypt many women are embracing hijab. So they wear a Burga, Niqab etc as an expression or icon of defiance against this secularization of their religion in their country as part of the revivalist movement indicative of the growth of the Islamic religion.

It’s hard to get anymore chauvinistic than Islamic culture. I understand their wanting to keep their culture and religion the same as its been for hundreds of years but really its not practical. Nothing lasts forever. The Christian religion knew this early on and the religion has changed drastically over the centuries. If you try to hang onto a culture for too long it becomes stagnant and only makes the inevitable fall more painful. It’s too bad they don’t understand this.

Thanks for visiting my blog…. well it does matter if you wear somehting you don’t like. I mean you have to feel fine with yourself with what you wear..that’s the most important.

Interesting series! (I’m reading backwards). I find the top picture very beautiful, the eye is mysterious and dark.
My Western upbringing would rebel too but hey, after all, our civilization has been wrong before… and our way of living doesn’t have to be the only way for the rest of the world.

Once I saw some women wearing Chador at Gucci getting a lot of shoes and amazing bags. At the time I did not understand why, later I found out that the ones who have money wear amazing and very expensive things when the women get together, when no man is around. They dress up of each other.
