The Others are Totem Poles

If half of us do 100% of the work,
can they double our workload and fire the other half?
It’s a trick question, because everybody knows
80% of us do 50% of the work.

Simple Machines (HyperPhysics, Georgia State University)

“Hard work. Well, that’s all right for people who don’t know how to do anything else.”
Quotation from Dan Totheroh, All that Money can Buy

“A method for modeling a distributed workload problem
resolution process including building a topological model of a
workload process comprising a plurality of hierarchical levels…”

Abstract from United States Patent 20040138867

I’ve always been told “hard work never killed anyone”, but I believe it’s better not to risk it.

I have a drawing I named “trop de chefs et pas assez d’indiens!

The first pictures made me think of the Ottawa joke (and Canada in general): two seasons, winter and construction.

I’m just annoyed at how, in my home state, the tribal leaders are all getting raises whilst the tribal members, who maintain the tribe’s way of life, are all being thrown to the wolves. As it were.

You see similar scenes like that over here, when the phrase too many Chiefs and not enough Indians comes to mind.

But I think the sum total of a good team will always greatly exceed the equivalent number of its individual contributions. My experience has been when you have complaints about some people working harder than others and so, on it’s usually indicative of a poor work culture and bad leadership with accompanying disharmony.

Part of it can also be in the over reliance in technology. I think its better to talk to people and avoid sending e mails if they are nearby. Avoid the monotony of power point presentations by switching it off and telling a story, invite a discussion or alternatively show pictures. The most successful meetings are generally ones intersprinkled with laughter, where people feel free to contribute and are relaxed.

Trust and integrity was always crucial for success in business, and a company that suddenly finds itself in the position of needing to lay off large numbers of employees is often indicative of one that is very poorly managed.

    Best wishes
