It’s Not Art If You Need Permission
Graffiti has worth. It beautifies a city. But Mark My Territory tags or
destructive Throw Ups are not cool. There is often a fine boundary
between good and bad graffiti. The art is in knowing the difference.
Lady Pink Turns Graffiti into a Positive Art (Queens Tribune)
Graffiti is a serious problem for a number of reasons (British Transport Police)
Brownie, You’re Doing a Heck of a Job (MadeYouThink.org)
“His achievements read like the graffiti on the walls of a hangman’s changing room.”
Quotation from Jonathan Larsen
One of my favorite comics is The Flowfield Unity by Adam York Gregory. He recently featured graffiti in his comic too! Small minds often think alike, which is pseudo scary, or kismet.

Na … but came to think of that it might be an act of art to get the permission?!?

Small minds often think alike – Is that what it is? That thing rattling around my skull?
Nice work soldier, and far more erudite than I.

If I could make pretty writing, I’d spray-paint it.
Since I can’t, I blog.

Back in the late 80’s and early 90’s when “tagging” was considered cool, I actually learned how to make graffiti art. I thought it was so cool, although I just didn’t have it in me to “deface” public buildings with my “works” of art. I stuck to doing it on large construction paper for my own purposes.
Some of those city graffitis are so damn cool though.

I love the artistic graffiti i encounter in the streets but it is rare to see the good ones. Too many posers.

Yes, that’s right! There is only a fine line between art and “problem” xx

I have to say I almost fell on the floor laughing at that sign. Great post and great thoughts Seraphine. Thanks again.

“It is not art if you need permission” — I love that! It’s true, I see so many artists doing and delivering what people expect them to do… I sometimes wonder where is the creativity. Too many rules kill art.

Seraphine: Back in the city where I was born, there was a parkway wall that was defaced so often, the authorities finally hit upon a good idea: Hold a competition with all of the local gangs who were destroying the place to come up with a colored pencil design. In the end, they allowed all of the groups who submitted designs to work on a section of the wall. Nasty street gangs tried several times to ruin the mural. But the gangs who created the artwork, came back and repainted the mural again and again. It actually looked good!

I’m not crazy about garden variety tagging although it doesn’t get my ‘citizen hackles’ up as much as garden variety homelessness, poverty or child neglect/hunger, but I do like creative grafitti and subversive stuff too. Interesting post.

It’s really rare to see nice graffiti art. I’ve seen someone do a beautiful mural and then have some punk, the next day, spraypaint all over it because they decided it would be better to put curse words in…lame.

street art in South Africa was the ONLY form of expression people had during apartheid. There’s still some awesome pieces left. But only a few.
