Yeeeeep. My EX mother in law is seriously evil. I loathe her. Detest and despise her…. and a lot of it because I think she had a role in creating her son’s issues… though he is grown and responsible for his own actions. All the same – really not a fan of hers. She’s nasty. Funny thing is – I always loved parents of people I dated. Lucky for me – Spartan’s mom is the polar opposite; she’s so darn huggable.
I love my mother-in-law. It’s my father-in-law who grosses me out.
i feel like the harder you try with a mother-in-law, the worse it gets. Try as in try to impress her, or try to get her goat. Stop trying so hard. Be yourself. And if she doesn’t like you, that’s her loss. Hugs to a super person who has more friends than the entire population of her town!!

Ah, family… I think we all have stories about it. Good and bad. Do your best, just know that we are all the same. I felt inadequate more than once too.

The psych-types say, the quickest way to strengthen a couple is to get one of the parent-types to oppose it. Something to consider…
I hope you find some common ground over time; a mother can be decidely one sided, what’s builds up in her mind as unrealistic expectations of an imagined perfect partner. But I’m sure you can figure out a way to win her over, or at least find a way to get along.

Common ground and “yes ma’am” as above stated would work, but just being you does teh trick, might take time but its worth it.
Ma-in-law and I had a nice talk last night.
I did what Hope said and was “just myself”.
It was the first time she was really nice to me,
where i could see it in her eyes and tell it was
something besides obligatory politeness and
disguised disapproval. Breakthrough! I hope
we are able to build on this.
We will never be good enough for their sons. That’s just the way Ma-in-lwas are! They can even make us think that they love us, but deep down they still think that we are not good for their sons.
