She’d be prettier if she wore contacts.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1967 (Loving vrs. Virginia) that
anti-miscegenation laws were unconstitutional. At that time,
38 states had laws prohibiting non-whites from marrying whites.
“Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, Malay and
red, and he placed them on separate continents. The fact that he
separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix.”
-Judge Leon Bazile, Caroline County (Virginia) sentencing Richard Loving
and Mildred Jeter Loving to one year in jail for being married (1959)
“There can be no doubt that restricting the freedom to marry solely
because of racial classifications violates the central meaning of the equal
protection clause” of the 14th Amendment. No state antimiscegenation
law will be able to stand in view of that unqualified, uncompromising finding.”

California Supreme Court Overturns Gay Marriage Ban (Los Angeles Times)
“I think that gay marriage should be between a man and a woman.”
Quotation from Arnold Schwarzenegger, Governor of California
“Is it a sin, is it a crime
Loving you dear like I do
If it’s a crime, then, I’m guilty
Guilty of loving you.”

Personal Rights is a subject

Which is why the state should not be involved in such social matters to begin with. One’s views of ‘correct’ behaviour that involves other *concenting* people must be a matter for your own moral theories, not a political process. If gay people want to marry each other, that must be a matter for them alone. And if some others want to decry that, that too is a matter for themselves. The state should simply not be involved.

I still can’t believe that the constitutional amendment in my state (Virginia — I know, I should have seen it coming) banning same sex marriage passed. But this is the same state that sterilized women that were deemed unfit to be mothers (retarded, mentally ill, criminals: all of which, in the American South, you are much more likely to be found if you were black) — a eugenics fervor that didn’t stop until 1979. And wasn’t acknowledged as wrong by the state until 2001. Go Virginia.
So glad I live in Philadelphia now.

In Spain it has been a bit of an issue, but gay marriage was finally approved. The funny thing is that it was approved after adoption rights for gays. Strange how politics works, isn’t it? Liked your comic. I wear contacts, but when I met my husband I still wore glasses and I got him anyway. So, sometimes life is fair.

These quotes are just awful! Cool you use the subtitle symbol of glasses and not glasses to deal with a tough subject..

Very insightful post Sera. And wonderful panels as always.
Same sex marriage is legal across Canada now, based on our courts interpretation of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The result after 3 or 4 years? Everything’s cool and there are a lot of new tourists from south of the border. Wedding bells are ringing across the land…

you shouldn’t even have to marry in the first place to consume privileged perks or rights within society
. The latter must be abolished…
