Steve McQueen mentioned to Eli Wallach on the set of his final film that this was what he wanted to do--fire everyone who works for him and retreat with his wife, horses, cars and motorbikes to Idaho. To his relief he wasn’t recognized over there until one night a lovely lady knocked on his door one evening and said –Oh Ezio ----Sam started to say SAM (then recognizing this lovely lady) then burst into a line from that famous song from South Pacific, Sam enchanted evening. He subsequently went missing, but this story is uncorroborated, maybe he took on anther identity, (nobody knows)... by simply changing his name by deed poll, ( don’t even call me Sam !) and growing a beard.
