It means, of course, "until death separates us from each other," but as a child it was one of those odd phrases that <i>seemed</i> to mean something but I couldn't quite tell what it was. Until death does what? It had the rhythm of sense, but its meaning came from ritual and repetition. Now I'm older, and I understand these things better.
