Falling: The Meaning of Dreams

Dreaming of falling represents your fears, insecurities and
anxieties. You feel out of control. But being overwhelmed
isn’t necessarily bad… I wish I could fall fearlessly.

“I fly in dreams, I know it is my privilege, I do not recall
a single situation in dreams when I was unable to fly.”

Quotation by Friedrich Nietzsche, Sämtliche Werke: Kritische Studienausgabe

“roving dreams—
over charred fields,
the wind’s sound”

Haiku by Onitsura

Ooooh, great comic and post, Sera. I can totally relate, although it’s been quite a while since I’ve dreamt I was falling, it’s one of my phobias, along with a phobia of high, unenclosed places.

  2. Seraphine Khorana Says:

The Wife. High unenclosed places, like fear of heights?
I think that’a called “Acrophobia” which sounds like a
fear of saying the work “Ack” but it really isn’t.

  3. Alex Says:

I love the picture at the top of your post. Very bizarre! I don’t usually dream about falling, but I hate it when I do. Makes me feel very discombobulated.

  4. Eidur Says:

It’s some time that I miss the “falling” dream.
I miss the adrenaline and the fear, the heartbeat and the huge jump in the bed when I touch the ground…
Guess there is a “maso” side somewhere in me…

  5. Gary Says:

I wonder how anyone would know that you die if you don’t wake?? Maybe just before they died they yelled out in their sleep, “Hey, I’m falling and I’m dreaming and if I don’t wake up I’ll die, Please wake me!!!”

    That would be a sign.

I sometimes fly in my dreams, I often did as a child. It’s so liberating.

  6. rags Says:

    dreams can really be scary!

    #1 weeurd dream
    The “short” version,
I had a dream with an old woman running thru a city with the old school gta style camera angle on ice, then the ice turned to eyes and the old lady was a young lady and then me, then there was a scene in an office building with a cool dance number to the beat of tounges snappin outta glass cups and slappin my arms everyone in thier cubicles started dancin with me, keyboard cord tried to choke someone and I tried to save them but it was the guy from ghost in the machine and then I was sliding down an icy hill and glass balls filled with water were fallin from the sky and a man in a deer costume that had a perfect circle hole in his antler plucked one outta the sky and I almost couldn’t stop sliding off the cliff and one of the balls broke, and i was drenched I woke up almost all the way off my bed and slobbering all over my arm.
    Lately: reoccuring dreams about kittens.

  8. ratchet Says:

kittens that looked dead in a bag (but they weren’t) and crashing into a building while surfing on a van and fighting my boyfriends sisters case worker for a gun on a bunkbed in the middle of a my gradeschool halllway.
Hope I’m not noodles grade crazy pants.

  9. Wrath Says:

I actually was able to fall and hit the ground in one of those dreams, once. I remember telling myself it was probably just a dream and that I should stick with it to see what happens. Oddly, even though this was years before SL came along, it seemed eerily similar to falling and landing while in mouselook. Go figure.

  10. Carolina Lange Says:

I have does dreams, but it’s been a while since my last one.

  11. manimala Says:

I also have those dreams. Freaky.

  12. Erik Tjallinks Says:

I often dream that I can jump very high and easily, over houses, buildings, and travel long distances, faster than a car and as high as an airplane. It’s not flying, it’s definitely jumping. I never dreamed (dreamt?) that I fell (except in love:). Great comics again Sera!
