What’s Your Musical Identity?
What kind of music do you like to listen to?
“Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. If you
don’t live it, it won’t come out of your horn. They teach you there’s
a boundary line to music. But, man, there’s no boundary line to art.”
Quotation by Charlie Parker, Children of Albion

It is very difficult for me to draw my musical identity. I love music, music takes a great part in my life and tough I’m just an amateur musician and not a pro, I can’t even think to live without playing and/or listening music. I try to be the most openminded person when it comes to music. Tough with time I refined my tastes, I still love very different musical genres and try to listen always to everything.
It’s really difficut for me to say what I listen to, but mostly from black music (jazz, soul, funky) to house and electronic (yes I like trance music as well!) these days.
The article “message in a ballad” is really interesting and I agree with its conclusions. I am a lyric freak and I love to use them as quotes or just in “general speaking”…
One last thing.
I do firmly believe that rock is dead.

When Duke Ellington was asked what kind of music he liked he said, “Man there’s two kinds of music - good music and bad music. I like the good stuff.” But what that really says is that it’s in the ear of the beholder.
I like many genres but seem drawn to independent artists with quirky sounds and lyrics I can hear. I’m often floored by a song that opens some door I wasn’t expecting. Try Cocorosie or Regina Spektor for examples of what I mean. I also like stuff that makes me move - these days it’s from Cuba or Australia (look up Cat Empire and get yourself moving…). And a well played violin pulls tears from me like a thorn pulls drops of blood.

So, I listen to a lot of Clutch, the Frogs, and The Venetian Snares. If’n we are what we listen to (to sum up) that makes me a beer drinkin’ noisy retard.
My theory of music is that people are all automatically music nazi’s. It’s best to be careful about caring about others, and reserve care for a select few. If you care about them, you’re obligated to listen to their shit-bag music. Who wants to do that? For example, I married a lady who loves Bon Jovi. Needless to say I hate fuckin’ Bon Jovi. Now, I’m stuck having to listen to Bon Jovi all the fuckin’ time. That’s fuckin’ love for ya, shit.

You have a point. My teacher once said that we in America strive to be different…just like everyone else. I think he and you are right. We truly have more in common with each other than we think.

Eidur. I love lyrics too. Sometimes they give me chills.
Gary. There is not enough quirkiness in music. Love your comments.
Kalai. Interesting you listen to your songs when you are disturbed.
Rags. Americans strive to be independent, but it’s a shared experience.
R.T. I’m sure The Wife only plays Bon Jovi to get you moving again.
Hugs all- thanks for your really GOOD comments!
