Masks

“Life will show you masks that are worth all of your carnivals.”
Quotation from Ralph Waldo Emerson, The Conduct of Life

“Tragedy and comedy are, indeed, but two masks worn by the same
character alternately, depending on the exigencies of the moment;
that is, depending upon which mask best represents him in such a way
as successfully to reduce the unacceptable tensions of his ambience.”

Quotation from David L. Hall, Eros and Irony: A Prelude to Philosophical Anarchism

one more time, you are so right…

    Very fine.

The trick seems to be about self-awareness. The glimpses I’ve had of what I believe is my true nature were too much to handle (because of the beauty, purity and freedom, not the other).

Masks are a requirement to get through each moment, each day…and fun at times too.

This is funny… today i was driving home (stereo volume not on “999″ or “666″ today… :P) and i was thinking about avatars, “dual-living”, masks as well… I was thinking… If I live my SL like I do. One brain “attached” inside my avatar. A place where I can be real, feel real. A place where, screened behind my monitor, I can give all of myself to other people. A place where I do really feel like getting “in touch” with other people.
Then… Who is living the “first” life now? (they’re both “real” to me). Who is the “avatarized” person? It’s the puppet in SL… or it’s the one who goes to work even when doesn’t feel to? It’s the one living total freedom i in respect of other ppl or the one who is used to “standard” social behaviour and consuetude? Who’s bringing the mask right now?
    (hey I have not gone schizo… yet… it’s just a phylosophical question. Maybe!) :)

Actually, the masks we choose to wear reveal a great deal about our true nature.

  7. rags Says:

interestingly enough, kids are the ones who have a knack for seeing behind masks.

Beth. I love your comment. We choose according to our nature.
    Esteban. Turtles all around.
Rags. I was afraid of masks, clowns, department store Santas. I wish I was a kid who instead found delight in everything…
    Kira, Kalai. Thank you! hugs.
Eidur. It’s not schizo to have a fantasy life that’s as real as a ‘real’ life. It’s schizo to forget the difference.
Thanks all for your thoughtful comments.
