Life is a Black Hole

Once we have exhausted ourselves, we collapse to form black holes.
No light escapes our intense gravity. Material attracted to a black hole
gains our enormous energy and radiates before being swallowed into
the center of the universe, where it becomes Life in a different form.

“What do you want meaning for? Life is desire, not meaning!”
Quotation from Charlie Chaplin in Limelight.

I don’t understand the universe. Either that means that it’s beyond me or that it’s magic, depending on whether I believe that science has an answer for everything, whether or not I know what that answer is, or whether I believe in intelligent design.

Most of the time? I don’t actually believe that science and intelligent design have to be mutually exclusive, and I’m totally willing, not only to own my ignorance, but to admit I’m wrong the second someone proves I am.

GW. I hate being proved wrong, as much as I do being wrong.

Great post (and artwork). I love the concept of the black hole, pulling all matter into its full nothing.

I think there is a fundamental flaw in assuming life has any pre-assigned meaning or purpose, particularly associated with an imagined creator. I lean toward looking at the more fundamental questiosn: Why should I stay alive? What brings meaning to me? Who can I love? What do I understand? And the big one at this moment - do I have fresh ground coffee in the kitchen?

It’s really less than a blink of time that I exist and am aware of it. In that blink, I like to look for the big picture, while keeping my eyes on who and what is right in front of me. Meaning? Lots and lots and lots, but I have to pay atttention. Now for that black hole at the bottom of my mug…

    Hi Sera,

Another great post and another thought provoking question. I was immediately reminded of C.S. Lewis and went to dig out a book I remembered (so thanks for that too since I wouldn’t have done so without your push). The quote is as follows:

If the whole universe has no meaning, we should never have found out that it has no meaning: just as, if there were no light in the universe and therefore no creatures with eyes, we should never know it was dark. Dark would be without meaning.

and one more that I can’t resist: You don’t have a soul. You are a Soul. You have a body.

Now it’s time to finish my tea and get back to work on the world’s ugliest silk scarf. Take care.
