Ultimately, you have to take risks or you sabotage your own growth. You learn it’s possible to take a risk and survive. It gives you courage.
“Do you want me to tell you something really subversive? Love is everything it’s cracked up to be. That’s why people are so cynical about it… It really is worth fighting for, being brave for, risking everything for. And the trouble is, if you don’t risk anything, you risk even more.”
-from Erica Jong, on How to Save Your Own Life
A freak but moist flower
tangles my lungs, knits into my heart,
crawls up my throat
and sucks like octopi on my tongue.
- from Anne Sexton’s poem “The Love Plant”
Dating rule #2 is think with your head as well as your heart. When in doubt, go with your heart (but never abandon the head completely).
I was attracted to this girl. She said she was attracted to me too. I was wary, however, because she seemed to be a serial dater. Over time, we talked. I began to trust her. She promised (twice!) not to share a confidence, but no sooner had I told her a secret than she told it to someone else. I was embarrassed and felt very foolish.
Dating rule #1 should be not to date people with problems greater than your own.
One night at the Wet Kitty, I met a sexy Dutch girl. We talked about places we knew in Amsterdam and Den Haag. She promised to send me a cooking recipe. She finally asked me to dance. She told me privately she was attracted to pain. Her fantasy was to be beaten with a board. She scared me.
